Summer Skincare Routine
In summer, the climate is marked by high temperatures and increased humidity. Based on the region the level of temperature can vary from warm to hot and humidity can also increase. The days become prolonged due to changes in the position of the sun along the Earth’s axis which can also cause heatwaves, and extreme weather conditions, and lead to health risks.
Skin Risks During Summer
Due to excessive sun exposure, there are plenty of skin risks during summer. Several skin risks are heightened due to increased sun exposure and environmental factors. Some common skin risks during summer include:
Sunburn: As the sunlight contain many harmful radiation such as UV, it excessive exposure in this case can cause a searious heat burn. It can make your skin turn red and you may feel irritation, pain, and sometimes blistering of skin. Medically, prolonged or severe sunburns can lead to long-term skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer, particularly melanoma.
Premature Aging: UV radiation is a major contributor causing the premature aging of skin. Over time, it affects the elasticity of your skin by damaging and breaking down the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, which are responsible for its elasticity and firmness. This process leads to the formation of wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. The harmful effects of sun exposure can make the skin appear older than it is.
Hyperpigmentation: More exposure to sun can stimulate the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. This can cause an uneven distribution of melanin, lead to dark spots or patches on the skin known as hyperpigmentation. Areas commonly affected include the face, hands, and shoulders. Dehydration: It is the most common factor included in causing skin problems. Due to high temperature in summer, increased sweating can baldy effect the moisture level in your body. Dehydration can make skin look dry, flaky, or rough. Proper hydration is essential to maintain skin elasticity and a healthy appearance. Drinking an adequate amount of water and using hydrating skincare products can help in recovering lost moisture.
Heat Rash: Heat rash occurs when sweat is restricted under the skin. This can lead to the formation of small, red bumps or blisters, causing itching or discomfort. Heat rash is common in hot and humid conditions, particularly in areas where clothing traps sweat against the skin. In this type of climate, taking care of your skin is the utmost priority. Skin is the most exposed part of the body, so it becomes crucial to take care of your skin during any weather, especially in summer.
Things that you can do for skincare is to cleanse your skin. Try to use a gentle foaming cleanser that removes excess oil, impurities, and sweat without stripping your skin.
Applying a Toner
Pores can get clogged due to sweating and sweat so exfoliate your skin twice a week to remove the dead skin cells.
Apply a hydrating and refreshing toner to maintain the skin’s pH level.
Moreover, against environmental damage, apply a hydrating and lightweight serum that contains vitamin C or hyaluronic acid.
Oil-free Moisturizer
As in summer, our skin gets excessively oily so switch to a lighter, oil-free moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated without feeling greasy.
Sunscreen
The best way to protect your skin during sun exposure is to apply sunscreen. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours if you’re outdoors. You can also apply face mist on your face to have a cool and refreshing effect on your skin all day long.
Hydrating Cream
Summer heat can cause dark circles or puffiness under the eye. To prevent that, use a lightweight, hydrating eye cream to address this problem. In the evening, ensure you remove all sunscreen and makeup with a gentle cleanser, and consider using a hydrating mask or a night cream to replenish moisture overnight.
Intake of Water
For health purposes, try to keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water. It will help to keep you hydrated inside too. Avoid sun exposure as much as you can. Do not get under sunlight from 10 am to 4 pm to stay protected from UV light radiations. Use hats, sunglasses, and clothing to protect your skin from direct sun exposure.
Home Remedies
There are also some common home remedies that can help you keep your skin healthy, hydrated, and protected from the harsh effects of the sun and heat.
Aloe Vera: Aloe vera gel is the cooling gel that keeps your skin fresh and hydrated. You can directly apply this on your face. But for a brightening and cooling mask, also add some drops of lemon in it.
Cucumber: It is also a common ingredient that is used during summer. You can place chilled cucumber slices on your face and eyes to reduce puffiness and cool the skin. Moreover, you can also blend cucumber and apply the juice as a toner to refresh and hydrate the skin.
Yougurt: For a hydrating mask, yogurt comes as the best option. You can apply plain yogurt to your face to keep it moisturized. Whereas, you can also add honey to make an antibacterial and hydrating mask.
Tomato: It also acts as a natural toner. Apply tomato pulp to your face to reduce tanning and even out skin tone. You can also mix tomato juice with sugar to create a natural exfoliant.
Rose Water: It is also a natural face mist that provides you with a refreshing face throughout the day to cool and hydrate your skin. Apply rose water with a cotton pad after cleansing to tone and soothe the skin.
Green Tea: For sunburn skin, green tea is considered an effective tool. Freeze brewed green tea in ice cube trays and rub the cubes on your face to reduce redness and inflammation. Also, use cooled green tea as a toner to refresh and protect your skin from environmental damage.
Coconut Oil: It is an effective solution for dry skin and it is used as a natural moisturizer for dry skin areas, but use sparingly if you have oily or acne-prone skin. Apply a thin layer of coconut oil to soothe and heal sunburned skin.
Applying Mint: Mint is also one of the effective home remedies. All you need to do is crush mint leaves and apply the juice to your face for a refreshing and cooling effect. You can also mix mint leaves with yogurt for a cooling and brightening face pack.
So, do not forget to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and eating water-rich fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon, cucumber, and oranges. Also, practice sun protection by wearing hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen whenever you are outdoors.
